Same Sex Marriage

March 15, 2012

Dear Mr. President,

My name is Holly. I'm a student at Parkway West Middle, and I'm writing to you today to share my deep thoughts about same sex marriage. The first time I realized this was an issue was when it appeared on the news one night. Coming into this issue, I felt pity for homosexuals; this is how I became interested.

To begin, making same sex marriage illegal is a violation of human rights. You may ask, "How so?" A woman named Lester has been desperately fighting for her rights to get married to her girlfriend for about two years now. She has taken this to court three times already, all because the government says she can't marry her soul mate. This isn't fair. Not giving homosexuals the rights to get married is taking away those rights we are given as Americans.  Would we ever restrict people from getting married because of race, religion, or disability, so how can we get away with restricting people from getting married because they're gay?

Also, studies have proven that when same sex marriage is legalized in a state, the divorce rate actually decreases! For example, in Massachusetts, two years after the legalization of gay marriage, the state boosted to the lowest divorce rate of any state in the nation. With this in mind, why wouldn't we want same sex marriage to be legalized? I mean, think about it… Divorce rate decreasing, more happily married couples, all because you legalized gay marriage in the nation. This could definitely lead to more votes. Simple mathematics. :-)

Mr. President, you have always had a campaign based on change, and now is the time for that change! Please create a bill allowing same sex marriage in all states, nationally. Thank you so very much for your time and consideration. I am looking forward to change! So, go Obama 2012!

Sincerely,

Holly
